The Bands
With over 200 students participating in a variety of band classes and extracurricular activities, the Franklin High School Band program has something to offer every aspiring band student.
Concert Band is an introductory level band course for those who have completed middle school band and are new to the high school band experience. The course is designed to develop the young musician's proficiency in performance and understanding of the art of music. Participants in Concert Band are also members of the FHS Marching Band. Individual and group rehearsal and performance time outside of class is required to fulfill the obligations of this course.
Symphonic Band is a middle level band course for those who need additional experience before auditioning for Wind Ensemble or for those band students that do not wish to participate in concert festival. The course is designed to develop the middle to upper level musician's proficiency in performance and understanding of the art of music. Participants in Symphonic Band are also members of the FHS Marching Band. Individual and group rehearsal and performance time outside of class is required to fulfill the obligations of this course.
Wind Ensemble is an upper level band course that is open by audition only and limited to standard wind ensemble instrumentation. The course is designed to develop the upper level musician's proficiency in performance and understanding of the art of music. Participants in Wind Ensemble are also members of the FHS Marching Band and participate in concert festival. Individual and group rehearsal and performance time outside of class is required to fulfill the obligations of this course.
Percussion Class is a course is designed to develop the young through advanced percussionist's proficiency in performance and understanding of percussive techniques. Participants in Percussion Class are also members of the FHS Marching Band and may participate in Winter Percussion Ensemble. Individual and group rehearsal and performance time outside of class is occasionally required to fulfill the obligations of this course.
Chamber groups and small music ensembles ranging from woodwind and brass quintets to jazz ensembles are extracurricular groups who meet outside of class to further explore performance techniques and music genres. These are open to all Franklin High School Band participants based on instrumentation.
Marching Band is an extracurricular activity at FHS . Marching band members perform at football games, marching band contests, parades, and other civic ceremonies. Membership in the marching band is open to all band members enrolled in a band class at FHS . Drum Line, Front Ensemble (Pit), Field Commander and Color Guard are selected annually by audition from members of the marching band. Marching band requires a fee to cover the costs of membership. Once a commitment is made to the activity, all scheduled performances and rehearsals are required for the members. Absences will affect the student's ability to participate in marching band.
Winter Drum Line is an extracurricular auditioned ensemble that practices several afternoons and weekends after marching band season is over. Performances are at winter drum line competitions around Tennessee and the Mid-South during the Spring Semester. Membership is open to players who are enrolled in a band class at FHS . A fee is required to cover the costs of membership. Absences will affect the student's ability to participate in Winter Drum Line.
Winter Guard is an extracurricular auditioned ensemble that practices several afternoons and weekends after marching band season is over. Membership is open to color guard members or those wishing to learn color guard skills. Performances are at winter guard competitions around Tennessee and the Mid-South during the Spring Semester. A fee is required to cover the costs of membership. Absences will affect the student's ability to participate in Winter Color Guard.
